Design Meaning
Matthew was called while sitting at the tax collector’s table. Christ did not wait for him to repair his reputation first. He called him directly, and Matthew rose to follow.
The coins, money bag, and ledger represent the identity and security Matthew left behind. The quill and open Gospel reflect the mission he later received: to preserve and proclaim the truth about Jesus Christ. The winged man or angel is the traditional symbol of Matthew’s Gospel. The surrounding cathedral architecture and Chi-Rho place his witness within the enduring life of the Church. This design centers on a hard truth: answering Christ’s call usually requires leaving something behind.
